Design and Philosophy

At our core, we are storytellers. These stores give us an opportunity to bring moʻolelo (stories) to life. Every design choice is rich with meaning, intended to be discovered, experienced and shared.

Storefront

The story of transformation starts at the front of the store with a lava stone facade that represents the initial flow. The trellis, made of Ohia wood, represents the “Makaha” gates that surround fish ponds.

Custom Art

Hawaiian artist Herman Pi’ikea Clark is hanging proudly in the front of the store representing the concept of kīpuka or islands of regrowth that are surrounded by new lava flows. Literally “a place of life where culture endures”

Store Materials

Basalt representing the cooled lava and the changed landscape, transforming into wood as the space progresses. Color palette inspired by the ulu, the ocean, and the slopes of Hualālai. Premium leather accents (seating)

Protocol Statement

"He Lena Ko Uka, He Nena Ko Kai" “The Yellow in the upland and the Yellow in the sea” The engravings pay tribute to the Hawaiian tradition of entering a space with respect and positive intention. We invite you to talk story with our team to learn more about the meaning behind each statement.

Store Theme

TRANSFORMATION: inspired by the story of Pele and the great lava flow in Hualalai. The resilience of the Hawaiian community and creation of new forms of farming and fishing as a result symbolizes a complete change. Lava is represented throughout with pops of red and yellow with abstract shapes and forms represent the change of one thing into something better.
