At our core, we are storytellers. These stores give us an opportunity to bring mo‘olelo (stories) to life. Every design choice is rich with meaning, intended to be discovered, experienced and shared.
At the heart of OluKai Charleston is the theme E Komo Mai, the Hawaiian phrase for “Welcome.” More than a greeting, it represents the fundamental connections between the aloha spirit and Southern hospitality, inviting guests to feel at home the moment they arrive.
The materials used create a sense of coastal lightness and cultural richness. A calming palette of white oak, polished concrete, brass accents, and coral tile adds warmth to the space. The ceiling and utilities are painted in a refreshing teal, reminiscent of water and grounding the retail space in its inspiration. Grasscloth wallpaper and stained wood introduce natural textures, while collaborative artist floor graphics and grasscloth infill paneling showcase OluKai’s blend of craftsmanship and cultural influence.
The fixtures and furnishings tell a story of craftsmanship, featuring layered wood techniques and geometric patterns on the floor that symbolize the interconnectedness of water sources in both Florida and Hawaii.
A key feature of the store's storytelling is a custom installation by Florida-based muralist Ya La’Ford. Renowned for her explorations of cultural identity and environmentalism, her work combines the values of stewardship and community.
Our main feature in this store is the concentric overhead light that represents the source (kumu) of the spring. The reflection of the planter/seating below represents life in abundance.
