Design and Philosophy
Store Theme: Mālama
At our core, we are storytellers. These stores give us an opportunity to bring mo‘olelo (stories) to life. Every design choice is rich with meaning, intended to be discovered, experienced and shared.
Storefront
Our storefront includes a tile facade designed to resemble the sandy shorelines of Hawai‘i and La Jolla’s beaches.
Store Theme
Mālama: To care for, protect, preserve, and honor.
Materials
Inside the storefront, customers will find coral tile floors mixed with lava tiles, linking La Jolla’s limestone to Hawai‘i’s volcanic rock. The exterior tile is repeated on the cashwrap, reinforcing natural elements back into the space. La Jolla and Hawai‘i share a strong visual and physical connection to their natural landscapes, with a palette of turquoise and deep blues reflecting the Pacific, balanced by the sandy, rocky tones of each of these coastlines.
Design/Architectural Detail
An archway references the tide pools and caves along La Jolla’s coastline while a sailcloth ceiling feature with a printed pattern nods to the movement of seals in the water. The shape of a lei is repeated in fixtures, set against the U-shaped form of a cave opening.
Custom Art
Created by San Diego artist Kori Gabs, our storefront’s custom artwork reflects the theme of mālama through an abstract interpretation of the shared connection between Hawai‘i and Southern California. Inspired by the vast landscapes, wildlife, and coastal cultures of both regions, the work explores themes of stewardship, connection, and care for the places we call home.
