A legendary Hawaiian waterman, Archie Kalepa is renowned for his aloha spirit and dedication to the ocean. A native of Maui and central figure in the big-wave surf world, he served as Chief of Maui County’s Ocean Safety Division for over 20 years, where he helped develop rescue techniques and safety protocols that are now used worldwide. He’s known for his contributions to not only the big-wave surfing world, but also the outrigger canoe paddling, and stand-up paddleboarding communities. In 2012, he was inducted into the Hawai‘i Waterman’s Hall of Fame. Committed to upholding traditional polynesian wayfinding, Archie has also crewed on numerous Hōkule‘a voyages.
